Slice, Dice and Navigate Your SSAS Data

Change the analytical view as your questions develop. Kyubit queries your existing SSAS model, so you can work with its measures and hierarchies without exporting data to a separate analytical model.

Rows, Columns and a Filter Axis

Build a cross-tab analysis with two visible grid axes and a separate filter axis:

  • Categories (Rows): Add dimensions and expand hierarchy levels to compare results in detail.
  • Series (Columns): Cross-tabulate metrics against time dimensions, customer categories, or regional breakdowns.
  • Filter Axis & Slicers: Isolate specific segments without crowding the visible matrix rows or columns.
  • Isolate, Expand and Collapse: Focus on selected items, expand individual members or use Expand All to explore the dimensions in the view.

Drill Down and Drill Through

Hierarchical Drill-Down: Expand a member to explore the next available hierarchy level, such as Year → Quarter → Month → Day. The available levels depend on your SSAS model.

Drill-Through to Detail Records: Inspect records behind an aggregate value and select detail columns where the model, drill-through definition and permissions support it.

Quick Slicers: Use on-screen slicers to focus the analysis on selected periods, regions or other dimension members.

Create Ad-Hoc Calculations and Named Sets

Add report-level calculations and member selections for a particular analytical task while keeping the underlying SSAS model unchanged. Existing cube calculations remain available alongside the calculations you create in Kyubit.

In-App Calculated Measures

Define calculated measures for differences, ratios, percentages and other analytical expressions without redeploying the cube. Advanced expressions may require MDX knowledge.

Dynamic Named Sets

Define member selections for your analysis, such as a chosen group of stores or products. Named sets can express more advanced selections, including rankings, using the appropriate MDX expression.

Conditional Cell Formatting

Highlight values against defined thresholds using cell colors, text formatting and grid KPI icons. Help readers identify results that need attention.

Switch from Grid Analysis to Interactive Charts

Switch your analysis from a grid to a chart to inspect trends and compare categories. Use the analytical interactions available for the selected chart and data structure to explore further.

Choose a Chart for Your Question

Use columns or bars to compare categories and line charts to inspect trends. Select a chart that makes the measures and dimensions in your analysis easy to understand.

Sankey Flow Analysis

Visualize how a measure is distributed across combinations of dimension members. A Sankey view can show, for example, sales by country, product category and sales channel. It represents relationships in the selected data, rather than inferring customer journeys or causal effects.

Investigate Results with Decomposition Analysis

Break a selected measure down by successive dimensions and keep the exploration steps visible in one workspace.

Decomposition analysis: explore a measure across successive dimensions in one workspace.

Explore How a Measure Is Distributed

Choose the dimensions you want to investigate—for example, Geography → Sales Channel → Product Class—and inspect the measure for each breakdown. If your analysis includes a variance measure, you can explore that measure in the same way.

Keep the analytical steps visible as you explore and adjust earlier selections. This is a user-directed investigation; the tree does not automatically identify the causes of a change.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kyubit OLAP Tools

Does Kyubit support SSAS Multidimensional and Tabular?

Kyubit connects directly to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) Multidimensional cubes and Tabular models. You can use the existing semantic model without rebuilding it in Kyubit.

Can non-technical users build ad-hoc analyses?

Yes. Users drag measures, dimensions and hierarchies from the model browser onto rows, columns or filters. Kyubit generates the queries for these visual interactions, so everyday analysis does not require writing MDX or DAX.

Can I define custom calculations without redeploying the cube?

Yes. Kyubit provides authoring tools for calculated measures and named sets without changing the production cube schema. More advanced expressions may require MDX knowledge; available calculations depend on the model and analysis context.

Can OLAP analyses be embedded into other web applications?

Yes. Kyubit provides embedded analytics options for integrating OLAP analysis into other applications. Review the embedded analytics documentation and examples for supported views, integration methods and authentication requirements.

What is the difference between drill-down and drill-through?

Drill-down expands an aggregate into the next hierarchy level, such as Year to Quarter. Drill-through returns detail records behind a selected value, where supported by the model and permissions. See drill-through configuration.

What determines analysis performance and data freshness?

Response times depend on the SSAS model, query complexity, result size, server resources and workload. Results reflect the data available in SSAS and any configured caching. Test representative analyses during the trial.
